Government Procures Over 24,000 Medical Equipment Ahead of Free Primary Healthcare Rollout

The government has announced the procurement of 24,534 pieces of medical equipment as part of preparations for the rollout of Ghana’s Free Primary Healthcare policy.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh made the disclosure during the Government Accountability Series, describing the move as a crucial step toward equipping health facilities for the new programme.

“In preparation for implementation, we have procured and are ready to deploy 24,534 pieces of essential medical equipment across the country,” he said. “This is intended to ensure our facilities and health workers are equipped and ready.”

Mr. Akandoh explained that the initiative forms part of efforts to retool health facilities and strengthen primary healthcare delivery. He noted that the government is prioritising CHPS compounds, health centres, and polyclinics as the first points of care under the policy.

While details on the specific items procured, distribution plan, and delivery timelines were not immediately provided, the Minister assured that the groundwork is in place for a smooth rollout.

The Free Primary Healthcare policy is expected to be launched in the coming days by President John Dramani Mahama. Implementation will begin in 150 districts before expanding nationwide by 2028.
