Lincoln University to Confer Honorary Doctorate on President Mahama

Lincoln University has announced it will confer an honorary doctorate on Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama in recognition of his global leadership and advocacy for reparative justice. The ceremony is scheduled for March 26, 2025, at the university’s historic campus.

President Mahama, who currently serves as the African Union’s Champion for Advancing the Cause of Justice and Reparations, will be honored for his contributions to democratic governance, international cooperation, and his commitment to social justice and education. The award also acknowledges his leadership in championing reparatory justice for the Transatlantic Slave Trade, a cause he has advanced at both the African Union and the United Nations.

Lincoln University President Dr. Brenda A. Allen described the conferral as deeply symbolic, noting the shared mission between the institution and President Mahama to broaden access to education, promote equity, and inspire servant leadership. The event carries added historical significance as Lincoln University is the alma mater of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, a central figure in the country’s independence movement.

President Mahama’s visit will coincide with his upcoming address at the United Nations General Assembly, where he is expected to table a resolution declaring the Transatlantic Slave Trade the gravest crime against humanity. The resolution, backed by the African Union and CARICOM, is seen as a landmark step in the global campaign for reparatory justice.

The honorary degree adds to a growing list of international recognitions for President Mahama, who has previously received honorary doctorates from universities in Nigeria, Scotland, and France.

Lincoln University officials emphasized that the event will highlight the institution’s enduring commitment to education, liberation, and leadership, while celebrating President Mahama’s role in advancing justice and reconciliation on the global stage.
