False News Publication Leads to Arrest in Accra

The Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team has arrested 20-year-old Promise Yayra Asamani for publishing false information on social media that wrongly implicated an Uber driver in criminal activity.

On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Selasie Kwaku Anthonio, a 43-year-old Uber driver, lodged a complaint after discovering a viral Snapchat post that featured his photograph and vehicle registration number, AD-1479-25. The post falsely branded him a “murderer and a thief,” alleging that he carried offensive weapons and used signal jammers to disconnect passengers’ network connectivity.

Mr. Anthonio reported that he became aware of the post on March 10 at about 14:57 hrs after being alerted by his nephew, Godsway Tetteh. The viral spread of the allegations led to distressing calls from family and customers, and Uber subsequently blocked his account, depriving him of his livelihood. He also expressed fear for his safety due to potential public hostility.

Investigations traced the origin of the claims to Stephanie Asamani, sister of the suspect, who was arrested on March 13 at her residence in Cambodia, Spintex, Accra. Stephanie recounted that she had booked a ride with Mr. Anthonio on March 9 and alleged suspicious behavior during the trip, including a phone call in Ewe and items she claimed to have seen in the vehicle. Following a verbal altercation, she exited the car and later shared her concerns with her sisters.

Promise Yayra Asamani admitted to publishing the post on Snapchat on March 11, labeling the driver a “killer.” She failed to honor a police invitation on March 12 and was arrested on March 14. During interrogation, she confessed that her post was based solely on her sister’s account and that she had no evidence to support the allegations.

She has since been granted police enquiry bail as investigations continue.

The police have cautioned the public against spreading false news, emphasizing that such actions are unlawful and can cause severe harm to innocent individuals.
