Ghana Signs Debt Restructuring Agreement with Belgium

The Government of Ghana has signed a landmark debt restructuring agreement with the Kingdom of Belgium, marking another significant step in the country’s ongoing economic recovery. The agreement was formally signed by Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson on behalf of Ghana.

This latest accord represents the eighth agreement Ghana has concluded with countries under the Official Creditor Committee (OCC) framework, as part of its external debt restructuring programme. It underscores Ghana’s commitment to restoring financial stability and building resilience after the severe economic crisis of 2022–2023, which forced the government at the time to declare a debt default.

Speaking at the signing, Minister Forson expressed gratitude to Belgium for its support and partnership. He extended appreciation to H.E. Carole van Eyll, the Ambassador of Belgium to Ghana, noting Belgium’s role in strengthening bilateral ties and contributing to Ghana’s economic turnaround.

“Ghana went through an extremely difficult period, but today the story is changing. We are recovering, and we are putting in place stronger systems to ensure we do not return to that point again,” Forson said.

The agreement is expected to ease Ghana’s debt burden, create fiscal space, and reinforce investor confidence as the country continues to implement reforms aimed at sustainable growth. It also highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing global debt challenges.

With this milestone, Ghana moves closer to completing its restructuring programme and securing a more stable financial future for its citizens.
