National Identification Authority (NIA) has clarified that the revised fees for Ghana Card registration and related services were approved by Parliament and not unilaterally introduced by the Authority.
In a statement dated August 19, 2026, the NIA explained that the current fee regime took effect on February 2, 2026, following parliamentary approval under the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080) and the Amendment Regulations, 2025 (L.I. 2512).
The Authority assured the public that its 276 district offices remain fully operational nationwide. At these centres, first‑time registration is free for persons below 25 years, while applicants aged 25 and above pay a GH₵30 processing fee. Card replacement attracts a GH₵200 charge, while record updates remain free.
The NIA also introduced the Prestige Centre, a 24‑hour optional service launched at Labone on August 1, 2026. The facility offers faster and more convenient access to Ghana Card services but does not replace the regular district offices.
“The Prestige Centre is an additional service and does not make its use compulsory,” the Authority emphasized, urging media houses and the public to verify fee‑related claims before publication to avoid misinformation.
The NIA reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and accessible identity services, noting that accurate public information is essential to maintaining confidence in Ghana’s national identity system.
