87 More Ghanaians Evacuated from South Africa

The Government of Ghana has received the eleventh batch of evacuees from South Africa, as part of the ongoing second phase of evacuations following xenophobic attacks in that country.

A total of 87 nationals arrived at the Accra International Airport on Monday, where they were welcomed by Ambassador Harold Agyeman, Coordinating Director for Political and Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, alongside senior officials and staff of the Ministry.

Ambassador Agyeman assured the returnees of Government’s continued commitment to their reintegration, urging them to remain hopeful and to apply the skills and experiences gained in South Africa toward rebuilding their lives and contributing to Ghana’s development. He emphasized the importance of African unity, peaceful coexistence, and solidarity, noting that Ghanaians and South Africans remain part of the broader African family despite recent challenges.

Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, modest resettlement packages have been provided to facilitate the evacuees’ transition into their communities. Speaking on behalf of the group, one of the returnees expressed gratitude to President Mahama, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria, and other stakeholders for their support throughout the evacuation process.

Representatives from the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Red Cross, and Port Health authorities were present at the airport to provide logistical and medical assistance, ensuring a smooth transition for the returnees.

This latest arrival brings the total number of Ghanaians evacuated since May 2026 to approximately 1,600, with about 300 more expected in the coming weeks to conclude the second phase of the evacuation exercise.
