Mahama Commissions B5 Plus Steel Plant, Hails Boost to 24-Hour Economy

President John Dramani Mahama has officially commissioned a state-of-the-art Steel Ball Mill and Section Mill Manufacturing Plant by B5 Plus Group, describing the investment as a bold step in Ghana’s industrial transformation and a significant boost to the government’s 24-Hour Economy agenda.

The new facility, unveiled on Friday, February 20, is set to substantially enhance Ghana’s capacity to produce structural steel sections, grinding media balls for the mining sector, pre-engineered building (PEB) systems, and a wide range of heavy industrial structures, including warehouses, tankers, trailers, and factory systems.

Speaking at the commissioning, President Mahama underscored the importance of industrial self-reliance, stressing that reducing steel imports could deliver major economic benefits. “If we reduce steel imports by even 20 to 30% annually, the foreign exchange savings alone could amount to hundreds of millions of dollars. This is what industrial sovereignty is about,” he said.

The President further highlighted the strategic role of the plant in strengthening domestic steel production and supporting Ghana’s broader industrialization drive. “Steel consumption is a strong indicator of industrial development,” he noted. “Across emerging economies, per capita steel consumption rises in tandem with infrastructural development, urbanisation, and industrial expansion.”

The commissioning of the B5 Plus facility marks a milestone in Ghana’s industrial agenda, positioning the country to meet growing demand for steel products while reducing reliance on imports. Industry analysts say the plant could play a pivotal role in supporting mining, construction, and manufacturing sectors, while advancing the government’s vision of a resilient, self-sustaining economy.
