Kenya’s vote count underway, as Ruto and Odinga eye presidency.

Kenyans took to the polls on Tuesday 9th August to elect their next president in an election deemed to be a close contest.

As outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta’s second term comes to an end, he expressed how smooth the exercise was and urged voters to come out and vote immediately after casting his ballot.

The two main candidates contesting for the elections are William Ruto who is the deputy president, and Raila Odinga who served as prime minister under president Mwai Kibaki from 2008 to 2013.

Days after polls closed, it is uncertain as to who will be the next president. The electoral body overseeing the elections, The Independent Election and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has not officially declared anyone as the winner.

However, there are media houses collating results that put different candidates ahead.

The IEBC is working to ensure a credible election to avoid a repeat of the 2017 presidential elections that saw the results being annulled by the Supreme Court. There are over 46,000 polling stations for this election and analysts say the official winner could be declared in the coming days, mostly due to the tedious process of verifying and collating each result.
