Ghana Clarifies Funding of Evacuation from South Africa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has firmly dismissed reports suggesting that Ghana is among African countries expected to reimburse the Government of South Africa for evacuation costs following recent xenophobic attacks.

In a press statement, the Ministry stressed that the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals was fully funded by the Government of Ghana and its partners, without any financial or material support from South Africa.

Since May 2026, more than 1,600 Ghanaians have been evacuated from South Africa, with the latest round continuing under the same principle of Ghana‑led funding. Upon arrival, evacuees are provided with reintegration funds, transport fares, and relief items to support their smooth resettlement.

The Ministry assured citizens that Ghana will not be listed among countries facing reimbursement claims, reiterating government’s commitment to protecting the lives and welfare of Ghanaians abroad.

The statement also conveyed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and Ghanaian partners for ensuring a fully Ghanaian‑funded evacuation.
