GES Suspends Zonal Inter-School Sports in Central Region After Violence

The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed the suspension of all zonal inter-school sporting events among Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) following violent incidents at recent athletics competitions.

According to a statement issued on February 22, the decision was taken after credible reports of clashes among students during zonal contests.

One widely shared video showed a student of Obrachire Senior High Technical School being assaulted during a district athletics meet with participants from Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) in Agona Swedru on February 19. Eyewitnesses said tensions during the competition escalated into a fight, resulting in the attack.

The Directorate expressed deep concern, stressing that such disturbances undermine the purpose of school sports and endanger students, staff, and spectators. It emphasized that inter-school competitions are intended to promote discipline, teamwork, mutual respect, and healthy rivalry.

To protect lives and restore order, GES Management has ordered the immediate suspension of all zonal athletics activities until further notice. The measure, it explained, will allow for a thorough review of the situation and consultations with stakeholders to develop preventive strategies.

Heads of SHSs and SHTSs across the region have been instructed to stop all scheduled competitions, notify students and staff, and ensure strict adherence to the directive.

“Please note that this directive takes immediate effect and must be adhered to without exception,” the letter stated.

The Directorate assured the public that sporting activities will resume once adequate safety measures are established to safeguard the integrity and spirit of school sports.
