Rand Refinery Partners Gold Coast Refinery to Boost Ethical Gold Sourcing in West Africa

Rand Refinery, Africa’s leading LBMA-accredited gold refinery, has announced a strategic partnership with Ghana’s Gold Coast Refinery (GCR) to support the Ghana Gold Board (Goldbod) in refining artisanal and small-scale (ASM) gold and elevating responsible sourcing standards across West Africa.

The agreement, signed earlier this month, will see Rand Refinery provide technical, operational, and commercial supervision to GCR, enabling the Accra-based refinery to meet internationally recognised assay and refining standards. GCR, established in 2016, currently has a refining capacity exceeding 80 tons per annum, with potential for future expansion.

Under the partnership, GCR will refine up to 1,000 kilograms of ASM gold dore weekly, in line with ethical sourcing standards. The Ghana Gold Board, a government-owned entity, remains the sole authority mandated to buy, sell, and export gold from small-scale miners in Ghana.

“This is a momentous occasion,” said Rand Refinery CEO Dean Subramanian. “We are committed to working with GCR and Goldbod to implement frameworks that ensure all sourced material meets international responsible sourcing requirements.”

Rand Refinery’s compliance protocols are designed to eliminate conflict gold, combat money laundering, and uphold environmental and social responsibility throughout its supply chain. The company’s sustainability framework—“People, Planet, Product and Provenance”—aims to ensure that Africa’s gold benefits local communities while minimizing environmental impact.

Through this partnership, Rand Refinery strengthens its footprint on the continent as a preferred refining partner, supporting local ASM refining and promoting transparency and ethical practices.
