The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, yesterday held a high-level engagement with the Vice President of Google at the ongoing Generative AI Summit in the United Kingdom. The discussions centered on advancing quality education in Ghana and across Africa through the transformative power of artificial intelligence.

In July 2025, Google announced a US$37 million investment in AI research and digital skills development across Africa. This includes the establishment of a new AI Community Center in Accra, part of the company’s broader US$1 billion commitment to Africa’s digital transformation. The initiative firmly positions Ghana as a key hub in the continent’s digital journey.
Google is collaborating with the University of Ghana and the Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub) to develop speech recognition and AI tools tailored for Ghanaian languages such as Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani. These efforts focus on non-standard speech patterns to enhance accessibility in education and digital services.
During the summit, Hon. Iddrisu emphasized the importance of including Hausa, a widely spoken language across Ghana and West Africa. He noted that integrating Hausa into AI tools would deepen regional inclusion and further consolidate Ghana’s leadership as an innovation hub on the continent.
The Minister also revealed that Google’s Director of Operations for Africa and the Gemini lead had assured him that Google’s education tools will be deployed in Ghana on a zero-rated basis. This means curriculum-aligned content and resources on the responsible use of AI in teaching and learning will be accessible to all learners, regardless of location or income.
“Ghana is not just participating in the AI revolution; we are helping to shape it for Africa,” Hon. Iddrisu affirmed.
