President John Mahama has strongly condemned recent attacks on teachers across Ghana, voicing particular concern over the treatment of a high-profile incident at Kade Senior High School.
Speaking at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Delegates Conference, the President addressed a viral video from October 2025 that showed students assaulting a mathematics teacher after he reportedly stopped them from cheating during an exam.
Mahama expressed disappointment that despite a police report, the students escaped formal disciplinary action after their parents reached an out-of-court settlement. He questioned the precedent of treating what he described as a criminal act as a private matter.
“I saw the video of the Maths teacher being beaten because he refused to allow our students to cheat, and they had a sense of entitlement,” President Mahama said. “The unfortunate thing is that the matter went to the police station… and they said they settled the matter amicably. How is that? This is assault. It is criminal.”
The President criticized the resolution, arguing that financial compensation alone was inadequate to ensure justice or deter future violence.
“But when we inquired, the police also said the teacher was compensated, so he didn’t want to press charges anymore. At least the children should have been booked, they should have been taken through the legal process,” he asserted. “At least if nothing at all, they should have been bonded to be of good behavior for a period of time, and then we will believe that justice has been done.”
Concluding his remarks, Mahama pledged full solidarity with teachers: “As for assault on teachers, I am with you 100%, we will deal with it.”
