AMA to Collect Tolls, Fees Throughout Christmas and New Year

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that the collection of approved tolls and fees will continue throughout the Christmas and New Year festivities, including weekends, as part of measures to sustain essential city services during the peak festive season.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Assembly said the decision affects traders, transport operators and market users operating within the metropolis. It explained that uninterrupted revenue mobilisation is necessary to support increased commercial and social activities that characterise the festive period.

The AMA also announced the activation of 24-hour sanitation and security operations across the city to ensure public safety and environmental cleanliness. These measures, according to the Assembly, will support continuous waste evacuation, routine clean-ups, rapid response to sanitation incidents and enhanced security enforcement at key public spaces, markets, transport terminals and major corridors.

“The decision is informed by the need to match increased commercial and social activity during the season with uninterrupted services, particularly in sanitation and public safety,” the statement said.

The Assembly urged the public to comply fully with existing AMA regulations as stipulated in its relevant bye-laws. These include the Operation of Commercial Vehicles Bye-laws, 2017, which require commercial vehicles operating from approved stations to pay daily tolls for the use of loading stations.

It also cited provisions on lorry park fees, which mandate drivers to pay prescribed fees upon entering lorry parks each day and to receive tickets as proof of payment. In addition, the Public Markets Bye-laws, 2017, require traders in public markets to obtain official proof of payment for store and stall tenancy arrangements.

The AMA encouraged all fee-paying members of the public to insist on official receipts or tickets for all payments and to report any unauthorised collections to the appropriate Assembly offices.

The Assembly further appealed to residents and visitors to cooperate with authorised AMA officers and partner agencies, and to support city cleanliness by using approved waste disposal points while avoiding practices that lead to choked drains and flooding.
