The Parliament of Ghana has passed legislation to rename several universities across the country.
Under the new law:
- The C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences will now be called the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Navrongo.
- The S.D. Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies will be renamed the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies.
- The Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development will be known as the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Kumasi. The law was passed on Friday, December 19.
Background to the Amendments
The C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences was originally established through Act 1000, passed on August 2, 2019, and assented to on August 23, 2019. The new Bill amends the Act to reflect the institution’s new name.
Supporters of the change argue that renaming the university will strengthen ties with stakeholders, boost public interest, and encourage higher enrolment, funding, and alumni support. This renewed engagement is expected to drive broader investment in higher education, with benefits for both the academic and economic sectors.
The Education Committee’s report noted:
“Many universities globally are changing names to reflect contemporary values and social justice. By following this trend, the University will enhance its global competitiveness and appeal to international students.”
Similarly, the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, established under Act 1001 in August 2019, has had its founding legislation amended to rename it the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies.
As with the Navrongo institution, the renaming is expected to foster stronger stakeholder relationships, increase enrolment, and attract greater alumni and public support—ultimately contributing to expanded investment in Ghana’s higher education sector.
