The Accra High Court has delivered a fresh ruling regarding the burial of highlife icon Daddy Lumba, directing the parties in the ongoing family conflict to deposit GH₵2 million by 2:00 pm today. Should they fail to comply, the funeral will go ahead tomorrow as originally planned.
During the hearing, the court recalled the lawyers involved and clarified that the payment is meant to offset expenses already incurred in preparing for the funeral, in case the burial is eventually suspended.
This decision comes after an earlier injunction from the same court, which prevented Kofi Owusu, the family head (Abusuapanyin), from organizing the funeral and stopped Transitions Funeral Home from releasing Daddy Lumba’s remains. That injunction was issued amid disagreements between the late musician’s maternal relatives and the family head over who should lead the funeral arrangements and manage the funds.
Previously, the court stressed the importance of consulting the immediate family in line with Akan traditions, instructing the first respondent to convene a stakeholder meeting within three weeks to settle on a new burial date.
With the GH₵2 million condition now imposed, the High Court seems to be striking a balance between following due legal process and ensuring the burial of the celebrated musician proceeds, while also safeguarding against financial losses tied to any changes.
Daddy Lumba, who died on 26 July 2025 at age 60, remains a towering figure in Ghana’s music scene, and public attention continues to center on both his enduring legacy and the family dispute surrounding his final rites.
