The Government of Ghana has strongly protested the alleged ill-treatment of Ghanaian travellers by Israeli authorities at the Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, describing the actions as unacceptable and deeply humiliating.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, government said it had received reports that some Ghanaian nationals were deliberately targeted, detained and subjected to inhumane treatment upon arrival in Israel on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
According to the statement, at least seven Ghanaians were held by Israeli officials without justifiable cause. Among them were four members of a Parliamentary delegation who were in Israel to participate in the ongoing Annual International Cybersecurity Conference in Tel Aviv. The group, government said, was only released after more than five hours of intense diplomatic engagement.
The remaining three individuals were subsequently deported on the next available flight and have since returned to Ghana.
Government said it had formally conveyed its “strong reservations” to Israeli authorities over the manner in which Ghanaians were treated, noting that the incident runs contrary to the long-standing cordial relations between the two countries.
“Ghana and Israel have enjoyed warm diplomatic ties for more than six decades. This conduct by Israeli authorities is provocative, unacceptable and inconsistent with our friendly historical relations,” the statement said.
The Ministry further revealed that it would summon officials of the Israeli Embassy in Accra to register Ghana’s strongest possible protest over the incident.
Government also indicated that it was considering appropriate reciprocal diplomatic measures, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the alleged mistreatment.
Meanwhile, the Israeli side has reportedly justified its actions on grounds of alleged non-cooperation by the travellers, which Ghana has described as “totally untenable” and inconsistent with the facts gathered by its mission in Tel Aviv.
Government assured the public that it remains committed to protecting the dignity and rights of Ghanaian citizens abroad.
