Ghana and Qatar have commenced the full implementation of their newly ratified Labour Mobility Agreement, paving the way for thousands of Ghanaian professionals to work under improved conditions in the Gulf state.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed in a Facebook post that he was hosted by His Excellency Dr. Ali bin Saeed bin Samikh Al Marri, Qatar’s Minister for Labour, on the sidelines of the Doha Forum. He expressed gratitude for the hospitality and brotherhood extended by his Qatari counterpart.
Hon. Ablakwa explained that with both Parliaments having ratified the agreement, Ghana will host the inaugural meeting of the Ghana-Qatar Joint Technical Committee in February 2026. The committee will oversee the successful rollout of the partnership and ensure transparency in recruitment processes.
Official data from Qatar’s Labour Ministry indicates that about 13,000 Ghanaians are currently employed in the country. The Minister revealed plans to double this figure by next year and reach 50,000 in the medium term.
He noted that Ghanaian workers will be engaged in diverse sectors including aviation, tourism, information technology, logistics, transportation, and public health, with strong protection of their rights guaranteed under the agreement.
“The Mahama administration will keep pursuing smart policies to create jobs for the youth both in Ghana and abroad,” Hon. Ablakwa affirmed.
The Labour Mobility Agreement is expected to deepen bilateral ties between Ghana and Qatar while expanding opportunities for Ghanaian youth in the global job market.
