The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has issued a detailed clarification regarding the recent incident involving lawyer Martin Kpebu, following his arrest at the OSP premises. The statement, signed by Sammy Darko, Director-SRC, outlines a pattern of misconduct, the circumstances of the arrest, and the ongoing investigations.
A Pattern of Misconduct
According to the OSP, this is not the first time Mr. Kpebu has acted improperly toward its security personnel. Officials allege that he often misrepresents events publicly after confrontations. A cited example was his claim of “16 petitions” calling for the removal of the Special Prosecutor, which he later admitted on KSM’s show was unverified hearsay.
Investigation Separate From Allegations
The OSP emphasized that the confrontation at its premises is unrelated to the ongoing inquiry into Mr. Kpebu’s allegations against the Special Prosecutor. The statement accuses him of refusing to cooperate with investigators, demanding changes to panels, and introducing new obstacles, while investigators continue their work professionally.
Misrepresentation of Investigators
The OSP rejected Mr. Kpebu’s claims that “junior staff” are handling the case, clarifying that the officers involved hold ranks equivalent to Deputy Commissioners of Police. It also dismissed his assertion that “the OSP is investigating itself,” stressing that fact-finding committees are standard institutional practice.
What Happened at the OSP Premises
- Events at the Gate: Mr. Kpebu reportedly parked outside the gate to conduct interviews with media before entering. Security cautioned him about photography and videography restrictions.
- Escalation and Arrest: The OSP says Mr. Kpebu reacted angrily, insulted guards, and threatened to report them. His conduct led to his arrest for obstruction of officers in the performance of their duties. The arrest was carried out without force, and no record of mistreatment exists.
Bail and Processing
- Bail Granted: Mr. Kpebu was granted bail under standard procedures. However, one of his lawyers allegedly caused a scene, insulting officers before being removed without force.
- Transfer to Holding Area: He was processed and transferred to a secured holding area, with the OSP insisting that all protocols were followed and access to counsel was not denied.
No Trap — Just Accountability
The OSP dismissed claims that it had “fallen into a trap,” stating that the arrest was a lawful response to misconduct. “Connections, public influence, or media prominence do not place anyone above the law,” the statement read, adding that similar behaviour would have resulted in arrest at any law enforcement facility.
Mr. Kpebu is expected to report again at 11 a.m. today for further investigations into obstruction of justice. A separate date will be announced for the continuation of inquiries into his allegations of corruption.
