Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed grave concern over the escalating political and human rights situation in the United Republic of Tanzania following the country’s general elections held on October 29, 2025.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry described the post-election environment as troubling, citing significant security challenges, including loss of lives, street clashes, and violent confrontations between security forces and protesters. The Ministry warned that these developments pose serious risks to Tanzania’s long-term stability.
Ghana extended heartfelt condolences to families of civilians who have lost their lives and wished those injured a speedy recovery. The government emphasized that the loss of civilian lives is deeply regrettable and called for calm and restraint.
The statement noted that Ghana acknowledges assurances from Tanzanian authorities to address impunity and uphold accountability, justice, and constitutional order. It underscored the importance of effective policing and public order management to protect human rights while ensuring justice for both injured protesters and security personnel.
Ghana urged Tanzanian security forces and relevant state institutions to remain mindful of their obligations under the rule of law, calling on all stakeholders—including political parties, civil society, protesters, and the security forces—to work towards safeguarding democratic values and preventing further abuses.
As a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to promoting global peace and human rights, welcoming calls from the African Union, the Commonwealth, the United Nations, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for transparent and impartial investigations into the post-election violence.
According to the Ministry, fair and equitable investigations are essential to ensuring justice for victims and due process for all—both detainees and alleged perpetrators—under international human rights law.
Ghana concluded by appealing to the international community to offer the necessary support to Tanzania during this critical period.
