Obasanjo Champions Accra Reset at Historic G20 Summit

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo delivered a landmark address at the recent G20 summit in South Africa, speaking on behalf of the Accra Reset, a transformative initiative spearheaded by former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.

The Accra Reset is a bold, Global South-driven platform designed to reshape development cooperation into a system that is country-led, regionally empowered, and globally coherent. President Mahama, who also serves as the African Union Champion for Reparations, has positioned the initiative as a pathway to move Africa and the wider Global South away from aid dependency and unsustainable loans, toward trade, investment, and wealth creation.

Announcing progress on the initiative, President Obasanjo revealed that an interim Secretariat of the Accra Reset has officially commenced operations in Ghana. The presidential council now includes more than two dozen former Heads of State and international leaders from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the Caribbean. A high-level panel is also being convened to prepare a landmark report on restructuring global governance.

In his address, Obasanjo stressed that the history of aid and loans has entrenched economic dependency. “To move forward, we must re-architect our economies based on trade and investment,” he said. He expressed gratitude to South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa and all G20 members for embracing this historic partnership opportunity.

“This is more than a summit speech,” Obasanjo declared. “It is the beginning of a new multilateral order that prioritises workable business models over endless aspirational targets.”

The Accra Reset is now poised to become a defining platform for reimagining global cooperation, with Ghana at the heart of its operations.
