Parliament Repeals COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy

Parliament has endorsed the repeal of the COVID-19 levy, a tax introduced under the Akufo-Addo administration to finance pandemic-related spending. The measure was officially abolished following the Finance Minister’s announcement in the 2026 budget.

According to government, the move is intended to ease financial pressures on households, strengthen business operations, and accelerate the country’s economic transformation agenda.

During the debate, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin welcomed the repeal but pressed for wider tax relief. He urged government to “go further” by eliminating the One Ghana Cedi levy on petroleum products and reversing the 18 percent electricity tariff hike. Such steps, he argued, would reflect a genuine commitment to ending what he termed nuisance taxes.
