Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has appealed to citizens to view the protection and stability of the cedi as a shared responsibility, stressing that no single institution can secure the currency on its own.
He made the appeal at the Cedi @ 60 Conference in Accra, where policymakers, economists, and business leaders convened to reflect on six decades of Ghana’s national currency.
Dr. Asiama urged participants to actively contribute to the dialogue, describing the future of the cedi as a collective national mission.
“Protecting the cedi is not the task of any one institution. It is a shared endeavour rooted in our belief in Ghana’s future,” he said, underscoring the importance of unity and common purpose in strengthening the currency.
He explained that the resilience of the cedi depends not only on sound macroeconomic policies but also on the everyday confidence demonstrated by citizens.
According to him, every Ghanaian — from schoolchildren learning basic arithmetic to traders and entrepreneurs driving local commerce — has a role to play in supporting the currency.
The Governor expressed optimism about Ghana’s economic outlook, noting that the next six decades provide an opportunity to reimagine the cedi and build a more robust financial system.
He encouraged stakeholders to share ideas that will help shape a resilient monetary future, while also thanking participants for their dedication and calling for renewed pride in the national currency.
His remarks set the tone for the conference, which forms part of wider discussions on inflation management, exchange rate stability, and long-term economic reforms.
