EOCO Breaks Up Cyber Fraud and Human Trafficking Ring in Mataheko-Afienya

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has announced the successful takedown of a major cybercrime and human trafficking network operating in the Mataheko-Afienya enclave.

The operation, dubbed “Operation LIFELINE, led to the rescue of seven Nigerian nationals who were allegedly trafficked into Ghana and coerced into cyber fraud activities.

The raid, carried out on Friday, November 14, 2025, resulted in the arrest of ten people. Among them were three suspects believed to be the masterminds of the criminal scheme, along with seven victims aged between 17 and 30 years. All those detained are Nigerian citizens.

In a statement issued on Monday, November 17, EOCO revealed that the victims had been enticed to Ghana under false promises of legitimate job opportunities.

Once in the country, however, they were reportedly subjected to “harsh and exploitative conditions” and forced to participate in online scams and other unlawful cyber operations. The case underscores the dangerous intersection between human trafficking and organised digital crime.

Authorities confirmed that the rescued victims are currently receiving assistance while investigations continue into the full extent of the syndicate’s operations.

EOCO used the occasion to deliver a strong caution and appeal to the public, urging citizens to make use of its hotlines to report suspicious activities linked to cybercrime or trafficking.

The Office also warned landlords and property owners to exercise strict due diligence when leasing properties—particularly to foreign nationals—to avoid inadvertently enabling criminal enterprises.

EOCO reiterated its determination to prosecute offenders, declaring:

“Individuals involved in such illegal activities are strongly warned to desist, as the Office remains fully committed to pursuing and apprehending offenders.”

The success of Operation LIFELINE demonstrates Ghana’s law enforcement agencies’ firm resolve to confront transnational organised crime and safeguard vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
