The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has issued a public health alert following a surge in seasonal influenza cases across several regions of the country. In a notice dated 16th October 2025 and addressed to all media houses, the GHS confirmed that the current wave involves Influenza A strains H3N2 and H1N1, both known to cause flu-like symptoms and rapid transmission.
According to the GHS, the increase in cases has been most pronounced in the Greater Accra, Central, Bono, and Eastern Regions, with the spike closely linked to the recent reopening of schools. The Service warns that the flu is spreading through droplets from infected individuals and contact with contaminated surfaces.
Common symptoms include sudden fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headaches, body aches, and fatigue. Vulnerable groups identified include children and adolescents, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with underlying health conditions.
To curb the spread, the GHS has outlined key preventive measures:
- Avoid close contact with sick individuals.
- Stay home when experiencing symptoms.
- Practice good respiratory hygiene, including covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
- Disinfect commonly touched surfaces.
- Get vaccinated annually.
Schools have also been urged to take proactive steps by encouraging sick students and staff to stay home, promoting hygiene practices, and educating their communities on flu prevention.
The notice was signed by Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, who emphasized the importance of public vigilance and cooperation in managing the outbreak.
Citizens are advised to remain alert and adhere strictly to the guidelines to protect themselves and others as the country works to contain the spread of the virus.
