Kenyan Activist Boniface Mwangi Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition

Renowned Kenyan human rights advocate Boniface Mwangi, known for his outspoken stance against government policies and leadership, announced on Wednesday his intention to contest the presidency in Kenya’s 2027 general election.

His entry into the race will serve as a litmus test for whether the widespread youth-led demonstrations over the past two years can evolve into a viable political movement.

Mwangi previously vied for a parliamentary seat in 2017, campaigning on a strong anti-corruption message, but did not win. Over the years, he has built a reputation for challenging human rights abuses both within Kenya and internationally.

“Our leadership has failed us in numerous ways. You pay taxes expecting service, or you’re supposed to pay bribes to get that same service,” he said during an event to announce his presidential bid.”So as we stand here, our country must be taken back into our hands.”

In May, Mwangi was deported from neighboring Tanzania after attending a court session related to a treason case involving opposition figure Tundu Lissu.

Later in July, Kenyan authorities charged him with unlawful possession of teargas canisters and a single bullet found at his residence. Mwangi denied the charges, asserting that the prosecution lacked credible evidence and described the case as “a big shame.”

Kenya is scheduled to hold its next presidential election in August 2027. Mwangi’s candidacy will need to be approved by the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission, which oversees the vetting of all aspirants.

Other contenders who have declared their intention to run include Senator Okiya Omtatah and former Chief Justice David Maraga. President William Ruto has also signaled his plan to seek a second term.

Additionally, a coalition of opposition figures—comprising two former deputy presidents and several ex-government officials—is preparing to present a unified candidate for the presidency.
