NDC Has No Plans to Extend Mahama’s Tenure — Asiedu Nketiah

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has made it clear that the party has no intention of seeking a third term for President John Dramani Mahama, underscoring the NDC’s unwavering adherence to Ghana’s constitutional provisions.

Addressing growing speculation about President Mahama’s political trajectory and succession dynamics within the party, Mr. Nketiah reiterated the NDC’s respect for term limits and democratic principles.

“We have never run our party in ways that conflict with the national constitution, and we don’t intend to do that,” he said. “We will stick by the tenets of the Constitution.”

His comments come as public interest intensifies over who might take the reins of leadership after Mahama’s current term concludes in 2029. Several prominent NDC figures, including Mr. Nketiah himself, have been mentioned in succession conversations.

When asked about his own presidential aspirations, Mr. Nketiah urged caution, warning that premature declarations could distract from the current administration’s goals and accomplishments.

“The party has not declared anything,” he noted. “I keep repeating my caution that we have to be very careful about the way we express our ambitions. Whoever succeeds President Mahama will ride on the achievements of the current government.”

He emphasized that early jockeying for leadership could derail the government’s agenda and weaken the party’s chances in future elections.

“If you conduct yourself in ways that will disrupt the activities of this government in ways that will make the government less successful, then you have a bigger problem,” he said. “President Mahama is only about eight months in office now, and you want to struggle to decide who will replace him—you know what it can cause.”

Responding to recent political chatter, Mr. Nketiah acknowledged the names being circulated including his own but called on party executives and influential members to exercise discipline and patience.

“If all of us decide today that, ‘Well, people say I can be president, so let me start organising,’ then everybody will be going across the country appointing campaign coordinators. How do you think that President Mahama can focus on achieving anything?”

His remarks serve as a reminder that internal party unity and focus are essential to delivering on the current government’s mandate and preserving democratic stability.
