Parliamentary Committee Tours Justice Ministry Agencies

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs has commenced a series of familiarization visits to institutions under the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department (MOJAGD), in line with its oversight mandate under Order 238 of Parliament’s Standing Orders.

Led by Chairman Hon. Mahama Shaibu, the Committee began its tour with a meeting with the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Hon. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine. Discussions centered on key operational challenges, notably staff shortages and the need for improved remuneration to boost morale and productivity within the Ministry.

The Committee then visited the Legal Aid Commission, where they engaged with Mr. Nelson M. Kporha, Acting Director of the Public Defenders’ Division. Mr. Kporha outlined the Commission’s pressing challenges, including a lack of personnel, inadequate transportation, and limited office space—all of which hinder effective service delivery.

At the Registrar General’s Department, Registrar Mrs. Grace Issahaque and her team highlighted several operational constraints. These included insufficient resources for staff training, outdated infrastructure and vehicles, lack of operational software, and the absence of a payment platform. These issues, they noted, have contributed to declining revenue.

The Committee also met with Mrs. Margaret Awuku-Gyekye, Editor of the Ghana Law Report and Head of the Council for Law Reporting. Her team reported difficulties such as inadequate staffing due to the Ministry of Finance’s delay in granting financial clearance, inconsistent conditions of service, and a generally unproductive work environment.

In response, Chairman Hon. Mahama Shaibu commended the agencies for their dedication and assured them of the Committee’s commitment to advocating for solutions to their challenges.
