Forestry Raid: GCAG Demands Probe Into National Security Attack On Ashanti Offices

The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) is demanding swift action following what it describes as a “shameful and unlawful” raid by National Security operatives on three Forestry Commission offices in the Ashanti Region.

According to eyewitness accounts, more than 15 armed agents stormed the Bekwai, Nkawie, and Offinso district offices, forcibly locking the facilities, damaging property, and intimidating staff on duty. The affected personnel are believed to have been playing active roles in recent clampdowns on illegal mining across seven forest reserves.
Describing the incident as a “grave breach of the rule of law,” the GCAG is urging President John Dramani Mahama and top government officials to initiate an immediate investigation and bring all those involved to book.
The Coalition has outlined four key demands:
•“Identification and prosecution of all individuals, including political actors, behind the raid;”
•“Arrest and dismissal of the operatives involved, particularly those captured on video;”
•“Interdiction of the Ashanti Regional National Security Coordinator;”
•“Establishment of an independent committee to probe the incident.”
GCAG further condemned what it sees as increasing “political interference in the work of the Forestry Commission,” warning that failure to act could lead to an erosion of public confidence in state institutions.
