Sam George Maintains Firm Position on LGBTQ+ Issues, Calls for Prompt Action by Parliament

Samuel Nartey George, the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, has reiterated his firm position on LGBTQ+ matters following Ghana’s recent choice to abstain from voting on draft resolution L.24.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Nartey stated, “My viewpoint on LGBTQ+ matters remains resolute. I’ve reviewed Ghana’s complete statement delivered on the parliamentary floor regarding our stand on draft resolution L.24. I fully support both the content and intent of the message.”

He voiced strong disapproval of Ghana’s abstention during the subsequent vote, saying, “I cannot, in good faith, comprehend the decision to abstain. This vote contradicts the stance Ghana has publicly supported and conflicts with my conscience. Our position must always be direct and unmistakable.”

He further shared that he and fellow lawmakers have reintroduced the same bill passed by Parliament last year, which former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo declined to approve.

“As I mentioned before, my colleagues and I in Parliament have put forward the exact bill that passed last year but was not signed by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I encourage Parliament to move quickly on its ratification so that it can be submitted to President John Dramani Mahama,” he said.

In closing, Mr. Nartey emphasized, “We cannot compromise the innocence of Ghana’s children or the integrity of our cultural values. Let our principles, conscience, and truth guide us.”
