Ghanaian business mogul and politician Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, is reportedly under scrutiny from foreign investigative agencies, according to Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem Sai.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, Dr. Srem Sai disclosed that international authorities are tracking Wontumi’s business activities, with concerns that he may possess proceeds of crime or materials linked to criminal investigations.
“There are issues with our foreign partners, an investigative agency,” Dr. Srem Sai stated. “We have partnered with other foreign agencies who are interested in things that have been traced—or suspicions of crime that have been traced—to his business and him personally.”
When asked whether the investigation was initiated by Ghana’s international partners, he clarified: “It is not necessarily triggered by our foreign partners, but they are interested in what we are doing and assist us, just as we assist them. That is how law enforcement works these days; it is cooperative and transnational”.
Dr. Srem Sai further explained that foreign agencies suspect that “the proceeds of crime or materials subject to criminal proceedings have found themselves in his possession”. However, when pressed on whether Wontumi had engaged in acts affecting foreign jurisdictions, he declined to disclose specifics, stating: “That is something I cannot put out at this time. But the point I’m trying to make is that we will not persecute anyone”.
The revelation has sparked intense discussions within political and business circles, given Wontumi’s influence in Ghana’s mining and political sectors. Analysts suggest that this development could have far-reaching implications if the investigations result in legal action.
Authorities in Ghana are said to be cooperating with their foreign counterparts, ensuring compliance with legal frameworks while supporting efforts to uncover any wrongdoing.
