The Ministry of Education has extended its deepest condolences to the families of seven students from Lawra Senior High School, who tragically drowned in the Black Volta River during a canoe accident on Saturday, June 14, 2025.
The students, all members of the school’s cadet corps, were attempting to cross the river near Dikpe, a community close to the Burkina Faso border, when their canoe capsized. Rescue efforts led by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Education Service retrieved the bodies, comprising five girls and two boys.
In a statement, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, expressed profound grief over the tragedy and assured the affected families of the government’s full support. He has directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to initiate an urgent probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate loss. The safety of students remains a priority, and we will ensure such incidents are prevented in the future,” the statement read.
Local authorities and school officials are collaborating with law enforcement to conduct further investigations. The Ministry has also pledged psychological support for grieving students and teachers at the school.
