NRSA orders Assemblies to remove unauthorized billboards by June 2 or face court action

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a firm directive to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region, demanding the removal of all unauthorized billboards by June 2, 2025 or risk legal action.

The NRSA initially set a 21-day deadline for assemblies to dismantle billboards that obstruct road visibility and pose safety risks. However, a scheduled meeting to discuss possible extensions failed as key assemblies did not attend.

According to NRSA Director-General Abraham Amaliba, this absence was interpreted as deliberate noncompliance, prompting the authority to escalate the matter to the courts

Officials warn that many of these billboards are mounted on road medians and near intersections, obstructing drivers’ views and increasing accident risks.

Amaliba emphasized that assemblies are responsible for licensing advertising companies and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. He noted that billboards exceeding permitted sizes and placements have become a growing concern in Accra

The NRSA has made it clear that any assembly failing to act within the deadline will face court action. Amaliba stated that the authority is prepared to enforce the law, ensuring that road safety regulations are upheld. He also stressed that the NRSA’s renewed push for compliance is part of a broader effort to create safer road environments for motorists and pedestrians

Assemblies now have less than a month to remove unauthorized billboards or risk legal consequences. The NRSA has urged local authorities to take immediate action, warning that failure to comply will result in court intervention.

As the deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the assemblies to see whether they will adhere to the directive or face legal repercussions.
