The Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has declared his unwavering support for the ongoing decongestion exercise in Accra, urging Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey to take bold steps in restoring sanity and cleanliness to the city.
During a meeting with the Ga Traditional Council (GTC) at Kaneshie on Wednesday, the Ga Mantse assured the Mayor of full traditional backing. The visit was part of the Mayor’s strategy to engage traditional leaders as Accra embarks on a campaign to clear traders and hawkers from unauthorized spaces.
Recognizing the Mayor’s early strides in key areas such as the Central Business District (CBD), the Ga Mantse praised the initiative and called for sustained momentum.
“If not for the fact that we are in our festive season, we would have poured libation for you today,” he remarked. “Your decisive effort to keep Accra clean is noted and appreciated. We are hopeful that wherever there is commercial activity, the environment will be kept neat and healthy.”
He further announced plans to accompany the Mayor to various towns, raising awareness about cleanliness and discipline in public spaces.
“We know you have been delayed in coming here, but we are happy with your work so far, and we know you are capable,” he stated. “Very soon, we will even travel with you to four countries to learn how they keep their cities clean. Our protocol team will reach out to your office to initiate that partnership.”
In response, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey expressed deep gratitude for the Ga Traditional Council’s backing, emphasizing the importance of seeking their wisdom before executing his duties.
“I came here for one reason—to brief the Council on the work I have been appointed to do. Accra is dirty, and I needed to come here to seek direction and blessings before I proceed. If I go wrong along the way, I want you to correct me,” he affirmed.
Accompanying the Mayor was Hon. Alfred Ato Allotey-Gaisie, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Korle Klottey, who explained the relevance of the engagement.
“Just a week ago, we were appointed to lead the decongestion in Korle Klottey. Today we are here to seek blessings so we can clean Accra with the Mayor,” he noted.
Adding his voice to the discussion, the Sempe Mantse, Nii Adote Otintor II, lauded President Nana Akufo-Addo for appointing the Mayor and urged mutual collaboration between city authorities and traditional leaders.
“Let’s work together and listen to one another so there will be development in Ga and Accra,” he advised.
The visit reinforced the Mayor’s “reset” agenda, which seeks to rebuild cleanliness, safety, and economic inclusivity in Ghana’s capital. With the backing of the Ga Traditional Council, Accra’s decongestion drive is poised to gain momentum in the coming months.
