President John Dramani Mahama’s administration has decided to scale back this year’s Independence Day celebrations, hosting the event exclusively at Jubilee House as part of an effort to cut costs.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State for Government Communications, announced the change, explaining that the previously planned regional rotational celebrations have been suspended.
The 2023 Independence Day event, which was held in Ho, cost the country an estimated GH¢15 million. Ofosu emphasized that the government is focused on prudent financial management while fulfilling its core responsibilities.
He noted that while the celebration had traditionally been held in the capital, recent years saw the event rotated among various regional capitals. However, in light of rising costs, President Mahama has decided to halt this rotational approach.
The decision was made after a review revealed that the additional expenses incurred from holding the event in different regions were unsustainable, especially given the country’s current budgetary constraints and ongoing economic challenges.
While the President acknowledges the importance of the event in Ghana’s history, he recognizes the need to reallocate resources due to the country’s economic difficulties.
President Mahama remains determined to mark the occasion with a meaningful, yet cost-effective celebration, ensuring that the event honors the nation’s heritage without placing undue strain on the national budget.
