“Day-To-Day Running Of Institutions Not Board’s Job” – Health Minister

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has reminded Boards of health institutions that the daily administration of an institution falls outside their mandate, stressing that this responsibility rests with management.

The Minister made the remarks on the second day of the Ministry of Health’s High-Level Mid-Year Review Retreat in Ho, where participants are being taken through training on corporate governance and the role of Boards.

“The day-to-day running of the institution is not the responsibility of the Board or Board members,” he said, calling for a clearer understanding of the distinct roles of Boards and management in Ghana’s health institutions.

He said good governance was critical in ensuring that the country’s resources were effectively used to improve the well-being of the people.

Hon. Akandoh used the occasion to reaffirm his personal commitment to ensuring that Health Agencies had Legislative Instruments (LIs) to guarantee good governance of their institutions.

He said understanding the respective responsibilities of Boards and Chief Executive Officers was essential to ensuring effective governance and preventing interference in the day-to-day administration of institutions.

The Minister also urged health institutions to exercise greater prudence in the use of public resources, particularly expenditure on seminars, training and travel, stressing that such decisions must reflect the country’s resource constraints.

He said the training would help participants better understand governance principles, avoid institutional infractions and make decisions that promote accountability and effective management.

Hon. Akandoh encouraged all participants to actively engage in the session and gain a clear understanding of their respective roles and responsibilities.

The retreat, which forms part of the Ministry’s mid-year review activities, has brought together heads and Board members of various health institutions across the country.
