Education Committee Probes Sector Challenges

The Select Committee on Education has continued its monitoring exercise with a second-day engagement involving four key agencies: the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), and the National Schools Inspectorate Authority.

Committee Chairman, Hon. Nortsu-Kotoe Kwasi Peter, explained that the exercise was designed to move beyond formal presentations, allowing members to interact directly with agency officials and uncover challenges not always reflected in written reports. Discussions focused on standards, accountability, and the credibility of Ghana’s tertiary education system.

During deliberations, Hon. Kingsley Nyarko raised concerns about academic dishonesty, citing reports of students paying others to complete assignments. He called for stronger measures to safeguard the integrity of academic qualifications and urged GTEC to collaborate with relevant institutions to ensure that satellite campuses operated by public universities meet required standards.

Ranking Member, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, proposed the establishment of a dependable system to rank university programmes based on graduate employment outcomes. He argued that such a framework would help students and parents assess whether particular programmes are delivering job opportunities for graduates.

At GETFund, Administrator Mr. Paul Adjei highlighted the escalating costs of completing stalled education projects. He explained that many projects awarded years ago can no longer be completed under their original contract sums due to rising material and construction costs. He appealed for a dedicated fund to complete abandoned projects and stressed the importance of sustained investment in classrooms, schools, and other infrastructure to improve learning outcomes and support national development.

The Committee’s monitoring visit forms part of Parliament’s oversight responsibilities to ensure accountability and strengthen Ghana’s education sector.
