Member of Parliament for Prestea-Huni Valley, Hon. Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, has raised alarm over the rising use of live ammunition during traditional festivals, cautioning that what should be a celebration of Ghana’s cultural identity is increasingly becoming a public safety threat.
Presenting a statement on the floor of Parliament, Hon. Cudjoe reminded the House that festivals such as Bugum Chugu, Feok, Odwira, Hogbetsotso, and Homowo were originally designed to promote unity, honor ancestors, and celebrate Ghanaian heritage. However, he lamented that these occasions, once marked by joy and cultural pride, are now increasingly associated with fear, injury, and even death.
The MP called for stricter law enforcement, stronger collaboration with traditional authorities, and urgent legal reforms by the Ministry of the Interior to prevent further tragedies. He emphasized that safeguarding lives must be prioritized to restore safety and dignity to cultural celebrations.
Hon. Cudjoe’s intervention adds to growing calls for a national conversation on balancing cultural practices with modern public safety standards, ensuring that Ghana’s festivals remain vibrant symbols of heritage rather than sources of danger.
