The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to deploy undercover personnel to board commercial vehicles as ordinary passengers in a bid to monitor fare charges and arrest drivers who impose unauthorised fares on commuters.
Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, disclosed the measure at a press conference on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, noting that the Assembly would collaborate with security agencies and relevant authorities to enforce approved transport fares and protect passengers from exploitation.
He described the practice of arbitrary fare increases as unacceptable, warning that drivers found charging beyond approved rates would be arrested and prosecuted. The exercise, he said, would particularly target early morning and rush‑hour periods when some drivers allegedly take advantage of high demand to double fares.
Instances cited included commuters ordinarily paying GH¢10 for a journey but being charged as much as GH¢20. The monitoring exercise will cover major transport routes and terminals serving Lapaz, Kaneshie, Awoshie, Kasoa, Shiashie, Madina, Nima, Airport Residential Area, Pokuase, Nsawam, Circle and other busy corridors.
Mayor Allotey indicated that the AMA would formally notify transport stations and operators of the directive, reminding drivers of their obligation to charge only approved fares. He appealed to drivers to consider the impact of their actions on commuters and refrain from exploitation.
Commuters experiencing arbitrary fare hikes were urged to report incidents with vehicle numbers to 0544 916 4628 to assist enforcement. The Mayor stressed that the Assembly remained committed to protecting residents and promoting fairness, discipline and order within the city’s public transport system.
