NHIA, NIA Deepen Collaboration to Enhance Service Delivery

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) have agreed to strengthen collaboration on matters of mutual interest aimed at improving national identification and health insurance services.

At a meeting in Accra on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, discussions focused on the NHIA’s lawful optimisation of the NIA database and ongoing efforts to register children aged 6–14 years. Both institutions explored opportunities to deepen cooperation, particularly in the use of the NIA database, and resolved to establish a joint technical team comprising legal, finance, and operations representatives. The team is expected to examine the issues and submit a report for consideration by the two Chief Executives.

The Executive Secretary of the NIA, Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, said the report would guide further discussions between the Chief Executives and relevant government authorities. On the registration of children, the NIA sought renewed support from the NHIA as it prepares to extend the exercise to the Northern and Upper East Regions.

Highlighting the benefits of collaboration, the NIA noted that closer coordination could reduce duplication and associated costs. NHIA Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe welcomed the proposal but called for a review of the previous exercise, particularly regarding achievement of targets and resource utilisation. He suggested a step‑by‑step approach to collaboration based on the availability and location of offices and resources, a proposal accepted as the basis for further consideration.

Both institutions will now assess specific locations to determine where collaboration would be most practical.

Present at the meeting on the NHIA side were Director of Legal, Ms. Annette Obenewaa Adutwum; Director of Management Information Systems, Mr. Joe Annor‑Darkwah; Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Oswald Essuah‑Mensah; and Director of Membership and Regional Operations, Mr. Sebastian Alagpulinsa. Members of the NIA Executive Management also attended.
