Prison Officer Interdicted for Attempted Drug Smuggling

The Ghana Prisons Service has interdicted Chief Officer Michael Osei-Bonsu (No. 8566) after he was allegedly caught attempting to smuggle Indian hemp into the Kete-Krachi Local Prison.

According to the Service, the incident occurred on June 19, 2026, during routine security checks before the officer’s night shift. The suspected narcotic substance was detected and retrieved at the prison gate.

Osei-Bonsu was immediately handed over to the Kete-Krachi District Police for further investigation. He was subsequently arraigned before the Kete-Krachi District Magistrate Court and remanded in custody for two weeks. The case has been adjourned to July 8, 2026.

The Prisons Service emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward drug-related offences and contraband, stressing its commitment to professionalism and integrity. It commended the vigilance of officers whose alertness led to the detection of the contraband.

“The Ghana Prisons Service will continue to collaborate closely with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that anyone found engaging in criminal activities is dealt with in accordance with the law,” the statement affirmed.

The interdiction underscores the Service’s resolve to maintain discipline within its ranks while safeguarding the integrity of Ghana’s correctional facilities.
