PURC Raises Utility Tariffs Effective July 1

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced upward adjustments in electricity and water tariffs, effective July 1, 2026. The decision follows the Commission’s quarterly review, which tracks key operational factors affecting utility service providers.

According to the release, electricity tariffs will increase by 3.49%, while water tariffs will rise by 0.85%. The Commission explained that the adjustments are necessary to maintain the financial viability of utility providers while ensuring continued service delivery to consumers.

Factors Considered in the Review

The PURC highlighted several indicators that influenced the tariff changes:

  • Exchange rate — The Ghana Cedi depreciated slightly by 0.2%, with a weighted average of GHS11.2228 to US$1.
  • Inflation — Averaging 3.43% for the quarter, representing a 17.74% decline from the previous quarter’s 4.17%.
  • Natural gas prices — Adjusted downward by 1.58% to US$7.9708 per MMBtu.
  • Electricity generation mix — Maintained at 20.90% hydro and 79.10% thermal.

The Commission emphasized that these quarterly adjustments are designed to preserve the real value of tariffs, enabling providers to remain financially sustainable while balancing consumer welfare.

Consumer Impact

While acknowledging the burden of tariff increases, PURC stressed that the adjustments are modest compared to previous reviews and are necessary to sustain progress in service delivery. The Commission assured consumers that it remains committed to protecting their interests while supporting the operational needs of utility providers.
