The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced a new partnership with the Noor Dubai Foundation to intensify Ghana’s efforts to eliminate onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness, by 2030.
During a meeting with Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the CEO of Noor Dubai Foundation, Dr. Manal Taryam, outlined ongoing and planned interventions. She explained that the Foundation, part of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, has been active in Ghana since 2009, primarily through cataract surgeries in Tamale, reaching up to 5,000 beneficiaries annually.
Dr. Taryam disclosed that the Foundation is now expanding its scope beyond eye care to support the elimination of onchocerciasis, with personal backing from the Ruler of Dubai.
Hon. Akandoh directed technical teams to fast-track all processes related to the collaboration, stressing that strict adherence to timelines will be critical to meeting national elimination targets.
“Eliminating operational delays and strengthening coordination will be essential to achieving full coverage,” the Minister emphasized.
He noted that Ghana’s progress in tackling neglected tropical diseases makes the country a strong partner in this fight. With coordinated efforts and sustained commitment, he expressed confidence that the elimination of onchocerciasis is achievable by 2030.
This partnership underscores Ghana’s determination to sustain progress despite global funding constraints, positioning the country as a leader in the regional fight against river blindness.
