The President of the Republic of Senegal, His Excellency Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to advancing reparatory justice and strengthening ties between Africa and its diaspora. He made the remarks while addressing the High-Level Consultative Conference on the Next Steps to the Landmark United Nations Resolution on the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans, held in Accra.
The conference was convened at the invitation of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana and African Union Champion on Advancing the Cause of Justice and the Payment of Reparations. The gathering brought together leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to chart a course for implementing the UN resolution, which formally acknowledges the magnitude of the transatlantic slave trade and racial slavery.
In his address, President Faye described the adoption of the resolution as “a major step forward for universal consciousness,” noting that for the first time, the international community had recognized with clarity the scale of the tragedy endured by enslaved Africans. He stressed that reparatory justice must be seen as an instrument for building a just, balanced, and equitable international order.
President Faye outlined key pillars of reparations, including recognition of historical truths, restoration of dignity, restitution of cultural heritage, promotion of education and research, and stronger connections between Africa and its diaspora. He urged stakeholders to engage collaboratively in advancing reparatory justice, cautioning against duplication of effort.
The Accra conference marks a significant milestone in Africa’s collective push to ensure that the legacy of slavery is addressed through justice, healing, and renewed solidarity between the continent and its global diaspora.
