Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), has held bilateral discussions with his Spanish counterpart, His Excellency José Manuel Albares Bueno, in Barcelona. The talks focused on migration, labour mobility, and maritime security, underscoring the growing partnership between the two nations.
Hon. Ablakwa commended Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the Government of Spain for their flagship immigration policy, which seeks to legalize and integrate 500,000 undocumented migrants living in Spain at least five months before December 31, 2025. The policy, being implemented between April 16 and the end of June 2026, guarantees legal status, dignity, and employment opportunities for migrants, while promoting skills development and multicultural harmony.
The Foreign Minister highlighted measures put in place by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assist Ghanaian emigrants who wish to benefit from the programme, assuring them of government’s commitment to providing relevant official documentation. He emphasized that the initiative offers a pathway for Ghanaians in Spain to secure their rights and livelihoods.
Beyond migration, Ghana and Spain agreed to deepen cooperation in maritime security and to expedite the signing of labour mobility agreements. These accords are expected to enhance opportunities for Ghanaian workers abroad while strengthening bilateral ties.
The meeting reflects Ghana’s broader diplomatic agenda to safeguard the welfare of its citizens overseas and to build stronger partnerships with international allies.
