President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to stimulating economic growth through the construction of modern multipurpose markets across Ghana. Speaking at a sod-cutting ceremony for a 24-hour model market in Bimbilla, Northern Region, the President explained that the initiative was a major campaign promise aimed at creating wealth and boosting local economies.

The new market model departs from traditional structures by incorporating banking services, storage facilities, fire and security protection, restaurants, crèches, and clinics to cater to the health needs of traders. President Mahama assured that each of Ghana’s 261 districts will benefit from the project.

“Everywhere we have our traditional markets, traders with farm produce and other wares gather once or twice a week, and people come from far and near to do business. We intend to build these markets to operate around the clock, thereby stimulating economic activity. This was a campaign promise, and we are committed to fulfilling it,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of linking agriculture to marketing, the President noted that Bimbilla, as one of Ghana’s major food baskets, deserves one of the largest facilities. He announced that the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will introduce value addition measures to prolong the shelf life of food crops, prevent gluts, and help farmers and traders recoup their investments.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim (MP), cautioned contractors against delays and poor-quality work, warning that projects would be withdrawn from non-performing firms. President Mahama, accompanied by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, and other officials, also inspected progress on a 300-capacity three-storey hostel under construction at the Bimbilla EP College of Education.
The 24-hour economy market initiative is expected to transform local trade, enhance agricultural value chains, and provide sustainable livelihoods across Ghana’s districts.
