President Mahama Hosts State Banquet for Zimbabwean Leader

President John Dramani Mahama hosted President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe at a State Banquet held in his honour as part of the ongoing three-day State Visit to Ghana.

In his remarks, President Mahama highlighted the historic bonds between Ghana and Zimbabwe, noting that their connection “predates formal diplomacy” and was forged through Africa’s defining struggles led by visionaries such as Kwame Nkrumah and the late President Robert Mugabe. He described the evening as “not merely ceremonial; it is a celebration of a relationship shaped by history, enriched by shared experiences, and sustained by genuine human connections.”

President Mnangagwa reflected on Ghana’s role in Zimbabwe’s liberation, recalling that many of his colleagues received military training in Ghana during the struggle for independence. “We are forever grateful to Ghana,” he said, adding that the visit presents opportunities for strengthened business-to-business cooperation and underscores the longstanding ties between the two nations.

In a gesture of mutual appreciation, President Mnangagwa received gifts of fugu and kente, while he presented President Mahama with a crocodile-skin bag and a unique artefact, symbolising the enduring friendship and cultural ties between Ghana and Zimbabwe.

The banquet reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to advance strategic cooperation, trade, and sustainable development, celebrating a partnership anchored in history, trust, and shared aspirations.
