Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing South-South cooperation and strengthening the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) at the recent Summit of Heads of State and Government held under the theme “A Transformed and Renewed OACPS in a Changing World.”
Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable James Gyakye Quayson (MP), led Ghana’s delegation to the three-day summit. Addressing the gathering, he underscored the need for a renewed OACPS that is stronger, responsive, and better positioned to advance the collective interests of its Member States in a rapidly changing global environment.
Hon. Quayson outlined several proposals to deepen cooperation, including:
- Enhancing connectivity among OACPS countries through joint investments in maritime and air transport to facilitate trade.
- Institutionalising annual meetings of Ministers of Trade and Finance to drive coordinated trade and investment decisions.
- Promoting collaboration among entrepreneurs within Member States to unlock investment opportunities and strengthen value chains.
- Encouraging labour mobility across OACPS countries to address skills gaps and boost productivity.
- Advancing joint investments to create value, deepen integration, and ensure shared benefits from natural resources.
- Exploring the establishment of an alliance of developing countries focused on raw materials to strengthen collective bargaining power and advocate for value addition in global supply chains.
He stressed that closer collaboration among Member States would lead to a more integrated, resilient, and economically empowered OACPS, capable of navigating the complexities of today’s global economy.
