Parliament Hosts Ghana Climate Resilience Dialogue

The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Environment, Energy and Finance has held the Ghana Climate Resilience Dialogue in partnership with the Global Renewables Congress, a project of the World Future Council. The dialogue brought together key stakeholders in the energy sector, including representatives from the Ministries of Energy and Finance, the Energy Commission, PURC, ECG, GRIDCo, development partners, and civil society organisations advocating for a just energy transition.

Opening the session, Clerk to Parliament Mr. Ebenezer Aumah Djietror emphasized that Parliament is prioritising renewable energy, describing it as not only a climate imperative but also a pathway to economic resilience, energy independence, and inclusive growth.

German Ambassador H.E. Frederick Landshöft pledged Germany’s continued support for Ghana’s renewable energy transition, while Mr. Gunnar Wegner, GIZ’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Cluster Coordinator, announced GIZ’s commitment to help Parliament transition fully from the national grid to solar energy.

Ms. Ramana Shareef, Project Manager of the Global Renewables Congress, noted that although Ghana has strong policies and achievable ambitions, progress has been slower than expected. The dialogue, she explained, was designed to identify the blockages preventing Ghana from meeting its ambitious renewable energy targets.

Technical presentations were delivered by Mr. Seth Mahu, Director of Renewable Energy and Green Transition at the Ministry of Energy, and Ing. Ken Frederick Appiah, Deputy Director of Renewables Regulations at the Energy Commission. They outlined the details of existing policy documents and shared insights into the progress and challenges of implementation so far.

The dialogue reaffirmed Parliament’s role in shaping Ghana’s energy future, with stakeholders agreeing that stronger collaboration, effective regulation, and accelerated action are essential to achieving climate resilience and a sustainable energy transition.
