UK High Commissioner Meets Gender Minister to Strengthen Collaboration on Equality and Social Protection

 The United Kingdom High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Christian Rogg, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, to deepen collaboration on gender equality and inclusive development.

The meeting provided a platform for both parties to discuss shared priorities and explore avenues for strengthening cooperation between the UK and the Ministry.

During the engagement, Dr. Lartey announced that a Legislative Instrument has been presented in Parliament to implement the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024. She explained that the initiative seeks to enhance collaboration among agencies and institutions to improve service delivery.

The Minister also highlighted ongoing efforts under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, noting that a nationwide reassessment is underway to expand beneficiary households from 350,000 to 400,000. She added that plans are being developed to support households graduating from the programme with sustainable opportunities, including the Adwumawura Programme.

Dr. Lartey underscored the importance of strengthening social protection systems through enhanced linkages, interoperability, and shock-responsive mechanisms to better respond to crises. Discussions further centred on women’s economic empowerment, with emphasis on skills training, improved access to capital, and support systems to enhance livelihoods.

Menstrual hygiene was also highlighted as a critical area, with the Minister stressing the need to boost girls’ confidence and promote dignity, while encouraging women entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in the local production of sanitary pads.

Commending the Minister for her dedication and leadership, H.E. Christian Rogg reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to continue providing technical and financial support to the Ministry. He noted that the UK is actively supporting initiatives aimed at building the capacity of young women and girls to enhance their participation in economic and public life.

Both parties expressed optimism about deepening their partnership to deliver inclusive and sustainable outcomes for vulnerable populations across the country.
